1. Use moisturising products to cleanse
Use the correct shampoo and conditioner!
Use shampoos and conditioners that mention the words moisture. Do not use shampoo and conditioner that mention the words dry damaged hair. Products that use this term are designed for hair that has been chemically damaged. Curly hair is not chemically damaged and needs moisture not protein repair.
2. Never brush hair dry
Only ever comb/brush your hair when it is wet. We would even go as far to say don’t even touch your hair when it is dry. This sounds dramatic but you’ll notice a difference if you currently do this and stop.
Do not brush or comb your hair in a dry state. Remember to try not to run your fingers through your hair in a dry state.
Shampoo your hair during the day; not prior to going to sleep. Put a soft plait in your hair during exercise.
3. Leave conditioner in
You can leave conditioner in the hair and allow the hair to dry. As curly hair is thirsty it will not feel lank and this will help to reduce FRIZZ when the hair is dry.
4. Comb wet hair gently
After shampooing and using conditioner use a wide tooth comb or tangle teaser to gently smooth out the hair shaft on wet hair.
5. Use anti-frizz styling products
Use an anti-frizz style product applied to the hair just prior to allowing it to dry. Most popular hair product manufacturers make some sort of frizz taming product.
6. Do not sleep on wet hair & plait it during exercise
Shampoo your hair during the day; not prior to going to sleep. Put a soft plait in your hair during exercise.
7. Hairspray on damp days
Apply a light hairspray on dry hair when going outside (aim down) or humid days. This will protect it from the moisture in the atmosphere.
8. Think Style
Style wise curly hair only works on very short hair (think Halle Berry) or long hair (think Kelly Hoppen, the interior designer).
How to dry:
Short hair: On wet hair after applying your styling product form small curls by twisting hair round finger and leave to dry naturally.
Long hair: On wet hair after applying your styling product form dreadlocks style ringlets and leave to dry naturally.
9. Try a 20-week smoothing treatment
Think about investing in a 20 week smoothing treatment such as Kerastraight.
10. No GHDs
Try to resist using thermal hair straighteners. It looked okay in 1994 when Jennifer Aniston and friends were the thing, move on it’s now 23 years down the line.
Remember; natural is beautiful.
