Daniel Gray Hairdressing: A History

Founded: 1981

The salon was founded in 1981 by Daniel and Sue Gray. The original salon was in a small listed building behind Barclays Bank. After trading there successfully for 10 years larger premises were required and they turned up in the shape of an old coaching inn stables, turned into a garage, just off the main road opposite the marketplace.

The salon prospered here until Booths upgraded their supermarket and it was decided the salon could not function in a calm professional environment with a building site next door! It was time to find new premises and the salon moved to a listed building on Stramongate. The building is grand and is of local interest as it’s the former Provincial Insurance building meaning a lot of our Lake District locals have passed through these doors over the years.

This building was and remains the perfect choice for Daniel Gray. The large north facing windows are a great backdrop for a hair salon. They provide lots of light without there being too much direct sun which provides an environment many artists crave for.

The original design theme for the salon was inspired by Daniel’s love of all things minimal and Japanese influenced. Dark wenge wood, porcelain, and frosted glass to imitate rice paper and 13 years on and several facelifts, the uncluttered, calming aura still pervades the space despite us investing in the latest technology.

No business prospers without good staff and we have been fortunate to have had more than our fair share of these special people. There are few hairdressers in our local area that are not either Daniel Gray trained or have been trained by a current or former DG stylist.

Nic joined the Daniel Gray salon aged 14 as a junior slowly working her way up through the salon as her skill set increased. In 2004 Nic became joint business Director and in early 2018 Daniel stepped down allowing Nic to become Sole Principle Director of Daniel Gray. As part of this process, Nic chose to rebrand the salon to Daniel Gray Hair & Beauty to ensure the brand matches the services we offer.

Although no longer an owner of the salon Daniel still works part-time for Daniel Gray Hair & Beauty and continues to learn new skills as well as share his vast experience with other team members.

Nic invests heavily in her team training ensuring all staff are able to access the latest training as well as enhancement courses to add to existing skill sets. Staff are able to approach Nic with ideas to help move the salon forward or to enhance their careers. This is particularly useful for the beauty team as there are constantly new techniques and exciting skills to learn.

Daniel’s original business ethos which Nic has enhanced ensures that Daniel Gray Hair & Beauty continue to offer exemplary customer service which helps the salon maintain its local, industry and multi award-winning status.

Nic and her team research new ways to utilise technology to offer clients the best experience even when not in the salon! By updating the website, building our online shop (launching soon) and offering an app we ensure that clients can get in touch via any means they choose. We update via all major social media channels and aim to inspire.

Nic and her team hope to see you in the salon soon!
